Prayer that gets results engages the whole inner man: the cry of your spirit, the meditation of your heart, the words of your mouth, and the thoughts and imaginations of your mind. When these are brought into agreement with the Word and will of God, you pray with greater focus, faith, and confidence.

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD…” — Psalm 19:14 KJV1

“…the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” — Romans 8:26 KJV2

First, there is the cry of your spirit. Effective prayer goes deeper than religious words; there are burdens that rise from within by the help of the Holy Spirit. Second, there are the meditations of your heart. What you continually believe and treasure inwardly matters. Let your heart meditate on God’s promises rather than constantly rehearsing fear, disappointment, and defeat.

Third, there are the words of your mouth. Prayer must find expression. Ask, confess, intercede, give thanks, and speak in agreement with God’s Word. Finally, guard the thoughts and imaginations of your mind. Do not spend an hour praying for victory and the rest of the day imagining defeat. Bring every thought into obedience to Christ and allow God’s Word to reshape the pictures you carry within.3

Bring all four into agreement: your spirit crying, your heart believing, your mouth speaking, and your mind expecting according to God’s Word and will. Refuse the contradiction of praying one thing while believing, speaking, and imagining the opposite. Pray fervently, believe deeply, speak faithfully, think scripturally, and trust God with the answer.

Today, I bring my whole being into agreement with God’s Word and will. My spirit will cry unto God, my heart will meditate on His promises, my mouth will speak words of faith, and my mind will dwell on what agrees with His truth. I refuse fear, double-mindedness, and negative imaginations. I will pray in faith, according to His will, and confidently expect God to hear me!
