“Before you marry a woman because you love her, watch her character. Proverbs warns us about women whose character can destroy a man’s peace, purpose and progress.”

1. The Contentious Woman

Proverbs 21:9; 25:241 “It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.”

Avoid her because her constant conflict can turn a peaceful home into a battlefield. In as much as couples faces disagreement, marriage cannot survive continual strife.

2. The Immoral Woman

Proverbs 5:3–5; 7:10–272 Proverbs repeatedly warns about the strange or adulterous woman who uses seduction to draw people away from wisdom.

This is because sexual unfaithfulness doesn’t only break trust; but it can also destroy a marriage, family and destiny. Don’t marry someone whose lifestyle constantly violates the covenant you’re about to enter.

Any woman who is constantly seeking validation from other men; talking casually and loosely about sex; overly flirtatious is dangerous to settle with.

3. The Foolish Woman

Proverbs 14:13 “Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.”

Why should you avoid a foolish woman? Simple! The foolish spouse can tear down what took you years to establish. Beauty may attract you, but wisdom will sustain the home. Avoid a foolish woman even if she is attractive.

4. The Lazy Woman

In Proverbs 31:10–274, the virtuous woman is described as industrious, responsible and diligent. Choosing to marry a woman who refuses responsibility can make you carry unfair burdens.

Dear friend, remember that marriage is partnership, and if one person continually refuses to work, contribute, plan or take responsibility, the other eventually carries an unfair burden.

Look for diligence, not entitlement.

5. The Woman Who Lacks Wisdom and Discipline

Proverbs 9:13; 31:265 contrasts the wise woman with the foolish woman. A woman may be beautiful, educated and successful yet lack self-control, discretion and wisdom.

Avoid this woman at all cost because intelligence without wisdom can still produce destructive decisions. Discretion in a woman is far more than education, beauty, and success.

IN CLOSING, I must say “Don’t marry only because she is beautiful. Don’t marry only because she loves you. Don’t marry only because she makes you feel good. Look at her character.”

Ask yourself these simple questions,

  • Does she build or destroy?
  • Does she bring peace or constant strife?
  • Is she faithful?
  • Is she responsible?
  • Does she walk in wisdom and discretion?

Proverbs 31:30 emphasises that “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.”

Marriage is too important to choose a spouse by appearance alone. Proverbs gives us serious warnings about contentiousness, sexual immorality, foolishness, laziness and lack of wisdom/discipline.

My son, remember that character will eventually become more important than beauty. Think!

  1. Proverbs 21:9 (KJV): It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house. Proverbs 25:24 (KJV): It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house. ↩︎
  2. Proverbs 5:3-5 (KJV): For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil: But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell. Proverbs 7:10-27 (KJV): 10 And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart. 11 (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: 12 Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.) 13 So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him, 14 I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows. 15 Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee. 16 I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. 17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. 18 Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. 19 For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey: 20 He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed. 21 With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him. 22 He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; 23 Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life. 24 Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. 25 Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. 26 For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. 27 Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death. ↩︎
  3. Proverbs 14:1 (KJV): Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands. ↩︎
  4. Proverbs 31:10-27 (KJV): 10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. 11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. 12 She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. 13 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. 14 She is like the merchants’ ships; she bringeth her food from afar. 15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. 16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. 17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. 18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. 19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. 20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. 21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. 22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. 23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. 24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. 25 Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. 26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. 27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. ↩︎
  5. Proverbs 9:13 (KJV): A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing. Proverbs 31:26 (KJV): She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. ↩︎
