Wisdom is knowing when to stop trying to revive what has died and start strengthening what still has life.
Today’s Scripture
Revelation 3:1–2 KJV – “And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.”
Today’s Reflection
Jesus did not tell Sardis to waste all its remaining strength trying to resurrect everything that was dead. He said: “Strengthen the things which remain.” Sometimes we must learn to let bygones be bygones. Not everything that was once alive in our lives is meant to be revived. Some relationships have ended. Some seasons have passed. Some opportunities are gone. Some people have chosen to walk away.
You cannot spend the rest of your life trying to prove your worth to someone who has decided that what you are is not enough for them.
Why exhaust yourself chasing a friend or brother who walked away? Why kill yourself trying to impress someone who became weary of you and chose another path?
There are things that are dead, and accepting that reality is not failure. Sometimes it is wisdom. The little strength you have left must be invested wisely1.
Look around you.
- Who remains?
- What remains?
- What is still alive?
- What can still be built?
Strengthen your marriage. Strengthen your children. Strengthen faithful friendships. Strengthen your calling. Strengthen your relationship with God. Strengthen the people who have stood with you.2
Stop mourning everything that left and start building with what remains. There is still something in your hands. Strengthen it before it dies too.
Today’s Prayer
Father, give me wisdom to know what to release and what to strengthen. Deliver me from wasting my strength trying to revive what You have allowed to end. Help me to value what remains, nurture it, build it and make it stronger. Give me grace to move forward without bitterness and to invest my life wisely. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
